Even though Viseu is surrounded by uneven reliefs, impeding a wider connection to the rest of the Portuguese territory for many years, two internationally well known geographers, Amorim Girão and Orlando Ribeiro dedicated long periods of their time to research and study this city.
The main reason for Amorim Girão to study Viseu lies in his origins, given that his hometown, Fataunços, is located in the city’s district. Forty years later, inspired by the prior geographer’s work, and by his pleasant school memories in the city of Viseu, Orlando Ribeiro engaged in studying the same town as well.
In this sense, I intend to make a guided tour into the city through the eyes of these two geographers, who analysed it from a historical and morfofunctional point of view. Moreover, Amorim Girão elaborated the first geographical study of the city, and it was for a long period of time one of its kind in the Urban Geography domain. Decades later, Orlando Ribeiro elaborated the first functional study of an urban centre in Portugal, analyzing the predominate functions of a distinctive street in the Central Area known as Rua Direita. This paper is part of a session named “urban description and urban form”. We propose a study of Lisbon photographic images (beginning of the 20th century): how these representations show an ideological conception about the Portuguese identity.

Conceição Tiago : The urban frontiers

Maria João Vaz : Unsecured places and disorder
This paper is part of a session named “urban description and urban form”. It will be focused the city as a criminal interaction place (Lisbon and Oporto between late 18th century and middle 20th century)

Frédéric Vidal : Lisbon in city directory and city guide at 19th
This paper is part of a session named “urban description and urban form”. We propose an approach to Lisbon space social history by analysing the way space categories, such as "street", "parish", "neighbourhood", "centre" or "periphery", have been delimited and operated in guides and directories.
