The paper examines the construction and reproduction of the aristocratic ideology of late medieval Castilian nobility, mainly through the didactic writings of the fourteenth-century statesman Don Juan Manuel (focusing on El libro de las tres razones/El libro de las armas). By using a theory of ideology proposed by the sociologist John B. Thompson, I aim to discover how aristocratic thinking was organized along the lines of separation of society based upon domination. I ask in which ways privileges and status were legitimized and explained, as well as how norms and ideals can be shown to rest upon unequal social stratification. Another important point is how aristocratic ideology had to contend with the principles of monarchy. I also include some reflections on which lessons can be drawn from this research into a comparative project seeking, in part, to generalize such findings. (Show less)

I am going to show how local élites of small State of Monferrato, that belong to Mantua until 1708, could survive and renovate themselves into the Kingdom of Sardinia during the XVIII century. Marriages, charges, feudal accommodations and urban roles were the keys of their strategies.

During the XVI century, an important group of colonial elite was formed through participation in the govern of conquests. in this period of the ocupation of Atlantic Coast, from São Vicente to Belém do Pará, each step foward helped to strenght the colonial elite in its birth and growth process. This work shows two diferent movements, the construction of a colonial elite in Portuguese America and the territorial consolidation of portuguese rule in Brazilian coast. Those movements are parallels and one complements the other. And, as the necessitu of defense of the new territory conquered demand a local population faithful to the Portuguese Crown and a new productive struture, we can say that the colonial dynamic defined as "Antigo Sistema Colonial"(Ancient Colonial System) was structured in this stage of Brazilian colonization (Show less)
