Patricia Ferreira Lopes, Francisco Pinto Puerto : Understanding the Andalusia's Late Gothic Heritage in Space and Time. Roles of Constructions, Social Networks and Communication

The region of Andalusia was the scene of several civilizations, from Roman, through Islamic and later, Christian reconquest. All these cultures have left their marks. This research study focuses on the period from the late 15th century until the 16th centuries. In this period, Andalusia is the stage for an intense exchange of professionals and knowledge that will stimulate a significant impact on the territory. Our methodology includes unconventional methods to investigate heritage: Geographic Information System and Graphs Visualization. We hoped that by using a range of approaches, we would generate new ideas about how Andalusia´s territory was defined, constructed, and experienced in this period.
We propose a new line to study heritage: heritage understood as a complex system in which the interaction and relation of several elements shapes the space in time. Apply a methodology that considers the activities of the various actors in the process of formation of this heritage seen as a product and producer of these relationships becomes essential for your understanding. Therefore, what we propose is to understand the complexity of the Late Gothic "phenomena" - analyzing their elements as an ontology. In order to achieve this goal, we are creating a historical database to analyze the network of buildings, roads, administration, materials and professionals. For some analyzes we use GIS, and for others - especially when we are analyzing the network of professionals - we use the Graphs. In addition, through this historical database, we also propose a multiscale analysis in which we analyze the elements on a territorial scale through the network agents in Andalusia´s region and on an urban scale through the typological classification of buildings – future interconnected to a Digital Information Model (BIM) - and their relationship to the macro-network.
This methodology may have applications in the future for many fields of heritage research and management. This paper presents some results of this innovative way of researching cultural heritage that could be joined to similar studies in regional or national contexts of Spain.

Jim Pimpernell : Social Networks among Tenants of an 18th Century Agricultural Estate - the Use of Social Network Analysis Software and Relational Database

The Berkeley estate is a large, long established agricultural estate in Gloucestershire, England. In the 18th century its tenants were drawn from a mixture of 'old wealth' gentry, 'new money' industrialists and tradesmen, yeoman farmers, and cottagers. For much of the century the tenancies were lifehold i.e. the tenancy continued until the last of up to three named individuals died. These individuals were almost always related by blood or by marriage. Importantly, many individuals appeared as lives in more than one tenancy, often with different family members. The nature of each of these tenancies was recorded in a series of surveys completed during the century.

This paper describes how the NodeXL social network analysis (SNA) software, when combined with the research relational database, was used to extract and analyse the sometimes complex relationships between the individuals named in tenancies. Also described is how the social structure of the 18th century was reflected in which individuals were granted tenancies by the estate. (Show less)

Family relations are important during life events and in taking life-changing decisions. Based on a dataset of more then 1200 employees of the train maintenance workshop in Haarlem (The Netherlands) a reconstruction of the family relations is made. The dataset contains a lot of family relations because the management considered family relations important while recruiting personnel in the fast growing workshop. Thanks to the data-entry of information from the marriage certificates throughout the Netherlands and tooling for automatic reconstruction of family relations – build in the LINKS-project -, a family network can be build without time-consuming genealogical research.

This paper is part of a broader research on a strike at the maintenance workshop in 1903. During this strike half of the employees decided to strike and the other half didn't. Different reasons are investigated. This paper focusses on the relation between the family network and the choice in taking part in the strike or not. (Show less)
